District 14 Commander Monthly Comments

May 2019

I would like to start by saying what a "GREAT" Banquet we had Friday night on April 26, 2019 at Post 10376 in Marble Falls, Texas. We had over 80 Comrades, family members of Voice of Democracy, Patriot's Pen and Teacher of the Year winners. Commander Lewis, Comrades and the VFW Auxiliary of Post 10376 did an outstanding job preparing the Post Home for the Banquet and Joint Meeting.

We also had a wonderful Joint Meeting too. We had three great speakers during the Joint Meeting. First Sergeant Daniel Sellers from Post 8577 of Copperas Cove and our own District 14 Quartermaster gave us his personal experience of combat during his 20 plus years of service. It took a lot of courage for Daniel to tell us his story and we thank him for sharing it with us. Next, we had Colonel Michael F. Thuss from Post 10376 out of Marble Falls talked to us about his time at West Point to Vietnam to serving in the Texas State Guard and working as a contract engineer. Our last speaker was Richard “Dick” Shawver the Department of Texas Junior Vice Commander. He starter off by saying he had a hard time trying to follow-up with the first two comrades that spoke before him. But Dick did an outstanding job too. Dick is a Gold Legacy Life Member of Nacogdoches Memorial VFW Post 3893 in Nacogdoches, Texas. He talked a little about his military career in the United States Marine Corps from 1968 to 1970 and servicing in Vietnam to the Department of Texas and the goals of the Department Commander Inge Conley and the Department being 102% in memberships.

As we close out April the District is sitting at a 106.25% in memberships with ten (10) Posts out of eleven (11) meeting all the requirements to make All-State and four (4) to six (6) making all the requirements for All-American too. This had been an awesome year for District 14. Again, I want to thank all the Post Commanders, Comrades, District Staff and VFW Auxiliary for making this an outstanding year.

Congratulations to our new District 14 Commander Anson L. Booker and his staff for 2019-2020 year. You can view his staff on the District website (Click Here).
